Kelly Porter was born and raised in the Washington, DC area—the daughter of a meteorologist/retired Air Force officer and a stay-at-home mom/community volunteer. She’s a graduate of Howard University, where she received a degree in communications before working in journalism and public affairs.

She eventually left corporate America to raise her children, and she also started an interior decorating business, fulfilling her lifelong passion for color and creating beautiful spaces, something she got from her mother. As a military wife, Kelly’s mother often transformed basic military housing into stylish homes.

Tapping into her writing skills, Kelly has penned scores of articles for several design websites, including Houzz and Sherwin-Williams. She was also featured in The Washington Post. She considers herself a writer at heart with a designing soul.

Kelly has since scaled back her business to write a book, THE WEATHER OFFICER, a deeply personal journey that has taken her on a quest to uncover her father’s life and legacy as one of America’s premier Black meteorologists. He asked Kelly to tell his story shortly before his passing in 1999.

After several years of research and writing, THE WEATHER OFFICER is scheduled to be released in mid-2024. You can join Kelly’s book community HERE.

Aside from being a debut author and storyteller, Kelly has a passion for travel (her latest trip was to Panama). She’s also a cultural foodie who loves Lebanese, Ethiopian, Thai, and Indian food.

As a vegan, she sticks to plant-based entrees, but will occasionally make an exception for crabs, which are a staple in the DC area, where she resides with her husband of thirty-one years. They were married at the same church as Kelly’s parents, and they have three adult sons.
