Kelly V. Porter is a lifelong resident of the Washington, DC area and a graduate of Howard University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. Early in her career she worked in public affairs at The National Endowment for the Humanities. Later, as a business owner and contributor, she honed her craft as a freelance writer.
Kelly’s debut book, THE WEATHER OFFICER, is a remarkable true story about her father, one of America’s first Black meteorologists. It’s a book he asked her to write just months before he died. With passion and persistence, she fulfilled his request. In the process, she developed a deep understanding of the critical nature of family storytelling and the dangers that arise when history is lost.
THE WEATHER OFFICER is available now.
Aside from being a debut author and storyteller, Kelly has a passion for travel, and she’s a cultural foodie who loves Lebanese, West African, Ethiopian, Thai, and Indian food. As a vegan, she sticks to plant-based entrees, but she’ll occasionally make an exception for crabs, which are a staple in the DMV, as its called by the locals. Kelly and her husband, Wayne, have been married for 32 years and they have three adult sons.
